Educating Consumers

With the rapid growth of Asia’s vacation ownership industry, it is more important than ever for potential buyers to be informed of the benefits of buying a vacation ownership product, and also of the potential pitfalls of engaging with rogue operators. As such, Anantara Vacation Club has presented consumers with a list of educational guidelines to help them make better-informed decisions with these purchases. Potential buyers are encouraged to do in-depth research, read reviews, and inquire about the following key factors as they relate to consumer protection:

  • Ensure Security & Tenure – Potential buyers are told that the use and enjoyment of vacation club units should be protected, and that valid vacation ownership companies establish independent companies to hold leases, licenses and occupancy rights on behalf of the club, and ownership interests should be held by an independent trustee. For example, Anantara Vacation Club has engaged Hutchinson & Co Trust Company Ltd. for the sole and absolute benefit of club owners.
  • Discuss Supply & Demand Assurance – Potential buyers are told that legitimate vacation clubs allocate a specific amount of club points annually to each of their properties to ensure there is sufficient space and accommodations for their buyers’ trips.
  • Confirm the Cooling-Off Period – Potential buyers are told that legally, vacation club buyers are granted a five day “cooling-off period” during which they are able to reflect on their purchase and opt out, with a full deposit refund, should they so desire.

Pauline Tay, one of Anantara Vacation Club’s Singapore based Club Owners, shared her views: “We became Club Owners at Anantara Vacation Club a couple of years ago, and couldn’t be happier. Anantara Vacation Club always seems to go above and beyond for their customers, and summarising these ‘best practices’ for vacation ownership purchases is yet another indication of that. The company has given us the opportunity to enjoy affordable holiday vacations with our family and friends, providing assurance along the way that these holidays will be protected for years to come.”

Derrah added, “We feel a responsibility to inform the public about the important differentiators between legitimate vacation ownership companies and other various rogue holiday club operators and resellers. There are important distinctions to look out for; ones which, if ignored, can present serious ramifications to the purchasers’ funds and security when booking a vacation.”
