To analyze the results of the vacation ownership industry in Latin America in 2009 we must consider the general outlook of the global tourism industry which, as we all know, was severely affected by a worsening of the global economic crisis. Additionally, there was also the outbreak of the A(H1N1) influenza virus that reached various zones of the region, particularly Mexico.
But true to its nature and performance, the vacation ownership industry in this region was solid, and showed noteworthy strength. While many other businesses or industries suffered severe losses, during the past year, 61 new resorts in Latin America became affiliated to an exchange company, and the region reported sales over 212,000 weeks-although 12% lower than the 256,000 intervals sold in 2008.
At the same time, occupancy levels in timeshare resorts remained higher than traditional hotel occupancy rates, and as a result, activity was sustained in the region’s leading tourist destinations.
