The way to future growth in the tourism sector in Málaga and its surrounding region has been identified by the regional authority as improving the tourist infrastructure, building a new terminal and runway at Pablo Picasso airport which will double its capacity, and increasing government investment in cultural highlights – opening eight new museums and including expansions to the Picasso Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art.

There are also plans in place to open 60 new businesses along Málaga’s waterfront as well as a new opera house.

Málaga has long been a gateway to the resorts of the Costa del Sol but this redevelopment will see it open up even further with the airport becoming an important hub for low-cost airlines, while the high -peed rail link to Madrid which opened around 18 months ago has already seen an increase in Spanish visitors to the region.

The developments also include the installation of tourist signs, directional signs, an audiovisual promotional package called Málaga City Cool, and lighting up the area’s most unique buildings.

The regional authority hopes the investment in the area will boost visitors as more people come to view Málaga as a cultural hub.
